Thank you very much to the Kaiser Chiefs and all their team for everything you did for us. Good Luck with the rest of tour and call in again soon. Check out what they are up to www.kaiserchiefs.co.uk
The story was covered in The Yorkshire Evening Post (email us if this link doesn't work). We are heading into more newspapers soon, will link them when we can.
Ok here's the interview. We gave the band a little tape recorder, and fired the questions at them. Unfortunately there was a lot going on so listening back to the tape and deciding who said what was difficult. Ricky did have the recorder most, but they all answered. Here goes...
In one of your songs you quote, 'Pneumothorax is a very long word' do you actually know what Pneumothorax means?
K.C: Yes, it means a collapsed lung. He's had one. Good question
Whose idea was it to first form the band?
K.C: We all individually wanted to be in a band. We are all equal, it's not as though there is a leader
Did you always want to be famous musicians/singer?
K.C: Not being famous, but being in a band and a successful musician, and liking what we do, that's the most important thing
What's the best gig/ TV show you have played?
K.C: Best gig? Usually when we come back to Leeds, they're usually good one's.
Best TV Show?
K.C: Top of the Pops, cos that's something you always want to do. When I was really young I really wanted to go on it. Now I've done it, it's old news
What are the last three albums that you have bought?
K.C: Luckily I get a lot free now, but Nick bought three - Best of the Buzzcocks, Stranglers, Roxy Music - old band
What musicians/ bands inspired you to take up music?
K.C: Loads, Mark Knoffler...
What's your favourite band of all time?
K.C: Heard of the Beatles?
If you could be a member of any other band what band would it be?
K.C: Madness, looked like a lot of fun being in Madness, Nick - I'd like to be in one of the 70's funk bands, where there's like 25 people all wearing silver and gold, and shoulder pads that can hit another member of the band, so I'd like to be the drummer in that band. I'd like to have been in S Club Seven, and the girls look quite attractive.
What video did you enjoy making most? And why?
Its a lot of hard work making videos, Oh My God was probably the most enjoyable, you had to jump around like an idiot in that one. Have you seen Everyday I Love You Less and Less? It was really hard work cos, you know that dancing skeletons, it only like 20 seconds in the video, took about 4 hours of doing it, and they kept going they want more, and we're like saying we're going as mental as we can possibly go.
Have your friends and family always supported you and believed that you could do it?
K.C: Yes, pretty much. When things were looking down they were going, they were like saying you should maybe try something else, I would say 'trust me, this will work, don't worry about it. It's gonna happen' they let us get on with it really. I recommend all parents let them get on with what they want to do.
What do you have to say to people who criticise your work like the chap who wrote into NME and said that he 'could name a dozen bands that have more life than the Kaiser Chiefs'
K.C:He's probably in a band in Leeds and very jealous. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Some people may think we are rubbish, but I don't think we are rubbish, and couple of thousand people that bought our album don't think we are rubbish.
What are your future goals and aspirations?
K.C: Big question, it changes everyday. We keep achieving things and then you want to move on. Eventually
Is it true Peanut found you in a pub Ricky?
K.C: No he found me outside school, Nick came to meet me and thought I was an idiot.
What is peanuts real name?
K.C: It's the same as another member in this band, it's Nick Baines, so we call him Peanut cos we can't have too many Nick's, it would get confusing. Nick's taller, so he wanted to be called Nick, and they had a fight over it (they didn't!). When he was about ten, he drew a picture of himself, and then another kid in the class looked at it and said look at Mr Peanut Head. Ever since then he's been called Peanut.
What's the favourite song that you have done?
K.C: I like NaNaNaNa Naa. Everyday I Love You Less and Less, I Predict a Riot.
Have you started work on your second album yet?
Yes. Started the other day. We have a few songs, and they are sounding very good. I am very pleased with the way it's going, and so is our manager.
Who or what is your inspiration?
Each other. Dunno.
What's your favourite place in Leeds?
My bed. Corn Exchange. Headingly's good. Peanut's is Boots in town.
Whitey: Can you read music or just tabs?
Just tabs
If you could do any other profession what would it be?
Ricky :Out of work actor, surgeon, or a heart surgeon.
Simon: how do you get your hair to form an Afro?
Just like my Mum's hair, its just curly.
One of our Cardiologists then introduced himself, was asked if he wore a cardie, being a cardiologist. Nope, he didn't even have one.
While they were here the band signed a drum skin, which we have on display on the ward, just ask and we'll let you know where it is!
